Preserving Our Heritage

For generations, the Achomawi people have revered nature's interconnectedness. Today, the Alturas Indian Rancheria is home to 15 tribal citizens of the Achomawi (Pit River) people on a 20-acre reservation near Alturas, California. Our traditional worldview recognizes that all elements of the natural world - trees, rocks, mountains, water - possess life and deserve respect. This understanding guides our approach to climate resilience. When rising temperatures threaten our water sources, we don't just see infrastructure problems - we see threats to living relationships that have sustained our people for millennia. Our climate assessment combines this traditional ecological knowledge with modern climate science to develop solutions that protect both our community's safety and our cultural identity.
